What is GOTS? Unraveling the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

June 26, 2023 /Posted byJustin / 100 / 0
In a world where ‘fast fashion’ has become synonymous with environmental disaster, there’s a green badge of honor shifting the narrative. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification is more than just a label – it’s a revolution. A revolution in how we make our clothes, how we buy them, and, most importantly, in how we think about them.

Before diving into the intricacies of GOTS, let’s talk about why it even matters. Climate change is no longer just an ominous future threat – it’s a current reality, reshaping our world in ways we can’t ignore. The fashion industry plays a role in this narrative. Accounting for nearly 10% of global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined, the fashion industry is a significant contributor to the problem. But it also holds potential to be part of the solution. Enter sustainability certifications like GOTS.

With consumers growing more conscious of the environmental footprint of their wardrobe, brands are seeking certifications like GOTS to verify their commitment to sustainability. GOTS is a holistic certification, considering environmental and social aspects throughout the supply chain. It represents a pledge to the future, a statement that our choices today will ensure there’s a healthy planet to dress up in tomorrow.

As millennials, we’re a generation that values authenticity and action. We want to make choices that align with our principles, and we’re willing to invest in them. According to a Nielsen report, 73% of millennials are willing to pay more for sustainable goods. GOTS certification serves as a beacon in this landscape, providing a trustworthy guide in the complex world of sustainable fashion.

In the words of Katharine Hamnett, an iconic British fashion designer and sustainability advocate, “If you’re not using sustainable cotton, then you’re using something that’s doing harm.” Hamnett, whose brand carries the GOTS certification, emphasizes its importance in an industry marred by greenwashing, stating, “[GOTS] is one of the few labels to trust.”

Stay with us as we delve deeper into the GOTS revolution, its significance, the brands championing this green standard, and why it should matter to us as consumers. It’s a journey worth embarking on, for the future of our planet, and the future of our wardrobe.

Tracing the Roots: The Genesis and Evolution of GOTS Certification

As we navigate our path towards a sustainable future, understanding the origins of GOTS and how it has shaped the fashion industry becomes crucial.

The Global Organic Textile Standard, widely recognized as GOTS, first saw light in 2006. A collaboration between leading standard setters, the Organic Trade Association, Japan Organic Cotton Association, International Association Natural Textile Industry (Germany), and Soil Association, it was birthed from a collective intent to streamline various regional standards into one that could be universally recognized and respected.

GOTS was designed as a stringent standard, encompassing all stages of textile processing, from harvesting of the raw materials to environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing, right down to the labeling of the finished product. This isn’t a ‘minimum requirement’ scenario – it’s a leap towards the gold standard of sustainable textiles.

As noted by Imran Amed, founder and editor-in-chief of The Business of Fashion, “The global fashion industry is extremely energy-consuming, polluting and wasteful. Despite some modest progress, fashion hasn’t yet taken its environmental responsibilities seriously enough. Fashion players need to swap platitudes and promotional noise for meaningful action and regulatory compliance while facing up to consumer demand for transformational change.”

Since its inception, GOTS has seen a significant increase in certified facilities worldwide. A testament to its success, GOTS reported a 34% increase in certified facilities in 2019 alone, and has now hit an all time high after several more years of growth.

“This all-time high in certified facilities across the globe confirms that GOTS meets the needs of the textile industry for a one-stop solution to fulfil their sustainability commitments and goals regarding organic textiles,” said Claudia Kersten, GOTS’ managing co-director.

Yet, GOTS isn’t merely about numbers. It’s about the broader impact these numbers represent – a tangible shift in the industry towards sustainable and ethical practices, a move away from the ‘take-make-waste’ model of fast fashion, and towards a more circular, mindful mode of operation.

In essence, GOTS signifies a turning point in the fashion industry, a landmark in the journey towards a sustainable future. As the saying goes, you’ve got to know where you’ve been to know where you’re going. And for the fashion industry, GOTS is a big part of that roadmap.

The Green Impact: Understanding the Significance of GOTS Certification

The fashion industry’s foray into sustainability is more than just a trend; it’s a necessity. As consumers, we’re learning that our purchasing power has ripple effects that extend far beyond our closets. This is where GOTS certification steps into the spotlight, and boy, does it shine.

In the grand tapestry of sustainability, GOTS threads its own unique narrative. It’s a comprehensive ecological and social standard that covers the entire supply chain. The main criteria include a minimum of 70% organic fibers, prohibition of harmful chemicals (bye, bye toxic dyes), respect for labor standards as outlined by the International Labour Organization, and wastewater treatment plants in wet-processing units.

In short, the GOTS certification is a safeguard, a promise to consumers that the products they’re purchasing meet the highest environmental and ethical standards.

Speaking to the Fashion Revolution, Carry Somers, its founder, explained, “The majority of the fashion industry is burying its head in the sand. As a global movement, we can bring the message straight from the cotton farmer, the mill dyer, the knitter, the weaver, the seamstress directly to the consumer, to show the truth, to show where change needs to happen, and how we, as consumers, can make a difference. For real change to happen, every part of the supply chain has to make a commitment to change, and that includes us.”

So, what’s the broader impact of this green badge of honor? Well, for one, it considerably reduces the environmental footprint of your clothing. GOTS certified organic cotton, for instance, uses 88% less water and 62% less energy compared to conventional cotton. A study by Textile Exchange affirmed that organic cotton farming could potentially save 218 billion liters of water and 92.5 million kg of carbon dioxide.

On the social front, GOTS certification ensures fair wages and safe working conditions. It prohibits forced and child labor, excessive working hours, and inhumane treatment. Workers also have the right to freedom of association and collective bargaining.

The organic farming methods prescribed by GOTS help create a healthier environment for farmers and local communities. It eliminates the use of toxic and persistent pesticides, contributing to biodiversity and healthier soils.

In an era when ‘greenwashing’ has become a marketing ploy, GOTS stands firm. It’s the reassurance consumers need that the ‘sustainable’ tag on their clothing isn’t just lip service. GOTS pushes the envelope, prompting brands to match their sustainability claims with concrete action.

As consumers, we’re not just buying products; we’re buying into the values they represent. The GOTS certification is an assurance that these values align with ours – that the clothes we wear are a reflection of our commitment to the planet and its people. After all, fashion is a form of self-expression, and what’s more stylish than sporting a greener, fairer future?

Leading the Green Charge: Brands Embracing GOTS Certification

In a world where ‘sustainable’ is the new ‘chic’, a host of brands are stepping up to the plate, putting GOTS-certified products at the forefront of their offerings. Here, we spotlight three such brands that are not just talking the talk, but walking the green walk: Allbirds, Happsy, and tentree.

Allbirds: Known for their ridiculously comfortable shoes, Allbirds is more than just a footwear company. They’re a company on a mission – to prove that comfort, design, and sustainability aren’t mutually exclusive. Allbirds utilizes GOTS-certified organic cotton in their line of T-shirts, promising the same comfort, breathability, and sustainability that their shoes have become famous for.

In a conversation with The Financial Times, Tim Brown, co-founder of Allbirds, explained the brand’s approach to sustainability. “I have always believed that designers and creatives and storytellers have a big role to play in how [climate] progress can be made,” he continues. “We don’t have all the answers, but asking the right questions can guide us towards a better product.” he shared. And GOTS certification is one way they’re doing just that.

Happsy: Who knew you could sleep your way to a healthier planet? Happsy did. This innovative brand offers a line of GOTS-certified organic mattresses, ensuring you get a good night’s sleep and the planet does, too. Happsy’s mattresses are made without polyurethane foam or toxic fire retardants, proving that health, comfort, and sustainability can go hand in hand.

In an interview with Best Slumber, the brand mentioned, “Some manufacturers take liberties with the words organic and natural. Often times, only a small percentage of their product is actually organic. That’s why the certification route was so important to us. It’s not an easy process, but one we considered necessary.”

tentree: As the name suggests, this eco-conscious brand plants ten trees for every item purchased. But that’s not all. tentree also offers a range of GOTS-certified clothing, driving home the point that fashion can indeed be forest-friendly.

tentree’s CEO, Derrick Emsley, speaks passionately about the brand’s environmental commitment. “…our goal is to create a product that has no “negative impact” but, rather, creates a positive one.” Emsley said.

These brands, each in their unique way, are leading a green revolution in the fashion industry. Their adoption of GOTS certification proves that sustainability isn’t a sacrifice – it’s an opportunity. An opportunity to create products that consumers love, and the planet appreciates. The next time you’re out shopping, remember these names. After all, green is the new black.

The Other Side of Green: Controversies and Opposing Viewpoints

In the world of sustainability, even the greenest initiatives aren’t immune to scrutiny. GOTS certification, for all its merits, is no exception. Let’s delve into some of the controversies and criticisms that surround this green standard and the responses they elicit.

One of the most commonly voiced criticisms against GOTS pertains to the cost of obtaining and maintaining the certification. Smaller brands and suppliers often find the cost-prohibitive, potentially creating a barrier to entry in the organic textile market. This cost factor extends to consumers as well, with GOTS-certified products typically commanding higher prices than their conventional counterparts.

In response to these concerns, GOTS argues that the higher prices reflect the true cost of production, one that factors in environmental and social externalities often overlooked by the conventional textile industry.

Another criticism is the perception that GOTS certification places undue emphasis on organic farming, potentially ignoring other sustainable farming practices. Critics argue that not all non-organic methods are harmful and that there’s a spectrum of sustainable farming techniques beyond organic farming.

GOTS counters this argument by emphasizing that their certification is not anti-innovation. While GOTS does promote organic farming, it also continuously evolves to incorporate scientific advancements and sustainable practices in textile production.

Lastly, there’s skepticism regarding the effectiveness of certifications in driving real change in the industry. Critics argue that sustainability in fashion requires systemic change, beyond what certifications can deliver. It’s a valid argument, given that sustainability is a complex, multifaceted issue.

GOTS, however, argues that while certification isn’t the sole solution, it’s an essential part of it. The rigorous GOTS certification process encourages brands to adopt sustainable practices throughout their supply chain, fostering a culture of responsibility and transparency that extends beyond the certification itself.

As in any field, debates and discussions are healthy, driving innovation and improvement. And GOTS, for its part, seems committed to evolving, addressing its criticisms head-on, and constantly striving towards its goal of promoting truly sustainable fashion. After all, the journey to a sustainable future isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon – one where every step, every critique, and every improvement counts.

Making the Conscious Choice: Why Opt for GOTS Certified Products

Imagine standing in a store aisle or browsing an online catalog, faced with a choice – to buy the regular, cheaper option, or spend a little more on a GOTS certified product. Why should you, the millennial consumer who cares about sustainability, reach out for the GOTS tag?

Firstly, choosing GOTS certified products is a vote for the planet. Every purchase of a GOTS certified item helps support organic farming, a method that is kinder to the earth, promotes biodiversity, and reduces water usage and pollution. It’s an opportunity to wear your values, literally.

Secondly, choosing GOTS is a nod to the workers who made your clothes. It’s a way of saying you stand with them for their right to fair wages, safe working conditions, and a life of dignity. In a conversation with Drapers, Dilys Williams, director of the Centre for Sustainable Fashion at the London College of Fashion, underlined this sentiment, “…we need to be able to go to a business and ask the difficult questions, to engage in what might be uncomfortable discussions, and for them to work with us about what it is they can change or do differently.”

Lastly, by choosing GOTS, you’re supporting transparency and accountability in an industry notorious for its opaque supply chains. In a world where greenwashing is rampant, the GOTS certification is a beacon of authenticity.

Most of us have grown up with a deep awareness of the environmental challenges our planet faces. We understand the power of our purchasing decisions, and the role they play in shaping a more sustainable world. Choosing GOTS certified products is a simple, effective way to wield that power.

So, the next time you’re shopping, remember: Going green isn’t just about making eco-friendly choices; it’s about making informed eco-friendly choices. And choosing GOTS? Well, that’s a green decision you can feel good about.

The Green Way Forward: GOTS and the Future of Sustainable Shopping

As we gaze into the future of sustainable shopping, it’s clear that GOTS certification has a major role to play. But what does this green future look like, and how does GOTS help us get there?

The future of shopping is undeniably digital. With the rise of e-commerce and the proliferation of online shopping platforms, consumers have more choices than ever before. This abundance, however, can be a double-edged sword, making it challenging for consumers to discern truly sustainable products from those simply ‘greenwashed’.

This is where GOTS certification steps in. By providing a globally recognized, rigorous standard, GOTS offers an easy way for consumers to navigate the sustainability maze.

Moreover, GOTS certification can act as a catalyst for brands to prioritize sustainability. As consumer demand for GOTS-certified products grows, it can drive more brands to adopt the standard, triggering a ripple effect of positive change across the industry.

Beyond the retail landscape, GOTS has the potential to influence policy. Governments worldwide are beginning to recognize the importance of sustainable fashion, and GOTS could serve as a blueprint for legislation. For instance, in 2020, the German government launched its Green Button – a state seal for sustainable textiles, drawing heavily on the criteria defined by GOTS.

In a world increasingly aware of the climate crisis, GOTS certification stands tall as an embodiment of the change we need – a shift from mindless consumption to conscious choice, from exploitation to empathy, from short-term gain to long-term sustainability.

As millennial shoppers, we have the power to shape this future, to choose a path that values people and the planet as much as profits. By choosing GOTS, we’re choosing this path, casting our vote for a greener, fairer, more sustainable world.

After all, sustainability is more than just a buzzword or a trend; it’s a way of life, a commitment to leave our world a little better than we found it. And that, dear readers, is a fashion statement worth making.
